Dear valued Toyota of Melbourne customer,
By now you have probably heard in news reports about the voluntary recall of certain Toyota vehicles. This might or might not include the Toyota vehicle that you are currently driving. Toyota of Melbourne is committed to make sure that you are driving the safest vehicle available. With that said, I would like to clear up several questions that have been presented to us to help answer your concerns as a Toyota owner:
Q1: What is the condition?
A1: There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically
stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.
Q2: What is the cause?
A2: Over time, some accelerator pedal mechanisms may become worn. As a result of this wear combined
with certain operating and environmental conditions, friction in the mechanism may increase and
Intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being hard to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case,
stick in a partially open position.
Q3: Are there any warnings that this condition exists?
A3: Gradually over a period of time, the driver may notice that the accelerator pedal is harder to depress or
is slow to return. In some cases, the driver may notice a rough or chattered feeling when
depressing/releasing the accelerator pedal.
Q4: Is my vehicle affected?
A4: The following is a chart of vehicles included in the recall (please note the comments section for addl info on each model)
Model Year Model Additional comments:
2009 – 2010 Corolla Vehicles built in Japan (VIN starting with “JT”) are not involved
2009 – 2010 Matrix
2007 – 2010 Camry Vehicles built in Japan (VIN starting with “JT”) are not involved and also certain VIN starting with “4T1” might not be affected but require an inspection for final determination
2005 – 2010 Avalon
2009 – 2010 RAV4 Vehicles built in Japan (VIN starting with “JT”) are not involved
2010 Highlander Vehicles built in Japan (VIN starting with “JT”) are not involved
2007 – 2010 Tundra
2008 – 2010 Sequoia
It is important to note that within each product line any vehicle produced in Japan is NOT affected by this recall (as notated in comment section above)
Q5: I heard on the news you cannot sell any new Toyotas, is this true?
A5: This is VERY untrue! Their are many new Toyotas that are not part of the stop sale notice issued by Toyota. In addition to those units, there is a lot of misinformation in regards to the units included in the recall. Toyota of Melbourne has many new Corollas, Camry’s, and many other units that are built in Japan and/or have the non-affected pedal assemblies.
Below is a list of new vehicles that are unaffected by the announcement and CAN BE SOLD:
- Yaris
- Prius
- Japan built Corolla
- Japan built Camry
- Camry with VINs that begin with “4T1” AND are equipped with Denso accelerator pedals
- Scion
- Venza
- FJ Cruiser
- Japan built Highlander
- Japan built RAV4
- Land Cruiser
- Sienna
- 4Runner
- Tacoma
Q6: What should I do?
A6: Again, as stated above Toyota Motor Corp. and Toyota of Melbourne are committed to making sure that you are driving the safest vehicle available. To provide consumer with peace of mind Toyota Motor Corp. volunteered to recall the particular units listed above to eliminate once and for all any fears that you might have in the future. Toyota Motor Corp. will announce soon what the corrective action will be, and as soon as that announcement is made, we along with Toyota Motor Corp. will notify owners as to what to do next.
Q7: May I come down to Toyota of Melbourne and have you inspect the vehicle for me?
A7: You may AT ANY TIME come to our dealership (without an appointment) during regular service business hours and we will have your vehicle inspected by a certified Toyota technician to verify if indeed you have an affected pedal assembly.
Q8: Is there anything I can do before Toyota announces the remedy?
A8: You have a couple options available to you, and again we will assist you with whatever you decide to do.
Option 1) Keep driving your Toyota (the actual number of incidents reported is estimated to be less than .0015% of the 2.3 million vehicles involved)
Option 2) Trade in your Toyota at Toyota of Melbourne. I certainly am very sympathetic to the fact that some of you are not comfortable driving a Toyota product that is under a recall. We have hundreds of NON-AFFECTED NEW TOYOTAS that are available for immediate delivery (including Corollas, Camry’s and all other models included in the list that have been verified as either a Japan built unit or have a pedal assembly that is not part of the recall). I will offer anyone a special trade allowance on your affected unit as follows:
If you own a 2009-2010 Toyota-get 90% of original M.S.R.P.
If you own a 2008 Toyota- get 80% of original M.S.R.P.
If you own a 2007 Toyota- get 75% of original M.S.R.P.
If you own a 2006 Toyota- get 70% of original M.S.R.P.
If you own a 2005 Toyota- get 65% of original M.S.R.P.
Appropriate deductions will be made for excess wear and tear and/or damage, and excessive miles.
Option 3) Rent a Toyota (that is not affected by the recall) until the remedy is announced. Toyota of Melbourne is now renting Toyotas and you will be offered a special rate if your vehicle is affected by the recent recall.
Please understand that your satisfaction is my main concern, and I have no other motive other than make you happy as a Toyota owner. I will do anything to accomplish that one important mission. My e-mail and cell phone number are included for a reason….. I am more than willing to speak to anyone who has a concern in regards to your Toyota. If at anytime (due to the volume of calls) I cannot answer please leave me a brief message and you have my word you will hear back from me personally!
Sincerely,
Christopher Heinze

Any motorist will know that, no matter how much money you pay for a car, how new or old it is, there will always be something that can go wrong. It doesn’t matter how rare the fault is, or how well the car runs most of the time, eventually something can go wrong – and when it does, you often find yourself having to hand over plenty of cash to get it repaired.
