Toyota has been named the greenest brand in the world in Interbrand’s first global report to focus exclusively on green.

The new report, which ranks 3M in second place and Siemens in third, combines public perception of environmental sustainability and a demonstration of green performance.

The Best Global Green Brands study finds that the strongest green brands consistently differentiate themselves and engage in green activities that consumers find relevant, as well as implementing profitable green practices across their organisations, including setting up and running environmental programmes and effectively measuring and reporting their performance to the public.

“As corporate citizenship increasingly becomes the norm, green initiatives may be among the most visible and easiest to claim and yet, can be the most challenging to deliver performance against,” said Jez Frampton, global chief executive officer at Interbrand.

“We believe the strongest green brands lie at the intersection of performance and perception: their ability to build stronger connections with consumers as a result of actionable and credible environmental practices.”

In completing the study, Interbrand evaluated consumer perceptions of each brand. Consumers in the 10 largest markets – the US, Japan, China, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Brazil, Spain, and India – were asked how green impacts their purchase decisions and their overall understanding and awareness of the brand’s green activities as a whole.

Toyota was found to be a leading example of making the environment a core management priority, while also engaging in a meaningful way with audiences around the world. Automotive and electronics companies, meanwhile, lead the way in implementing sustainable practices across their organisations and in communicating their efforts effectively to the public.

According to the report, a number of brands show large gaps between performance and perception. For example, L’Oréal, Nokia, and HSBC all scored significantly higher in performance than perception, suggesting that while they are doing great things internally in terms of environmental sustainability, they are not yet communicating their efforts to consumers as clearly as they could.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s, GE, and Coca-Cola all scored significantly higher in perception than performance. This suggests that these highly visible brands enjoy the positive impact of being a well known, powerful brand, with green perception matching general perception overall.

Toyota overtakes BMW as most valuable global car brand

Toyota Motor Corp. has regained its position as the world's most valuable auto brand despite the carmaker's massive recall campaign.

Toyota's brand value jumped 11 percent to $24.2 billion in the BrandZ Top 100 annual ranking of the world's most valuable brands, overtaking BMW, which was No. 1 last year in the automotive category.

The ranking, whose 2011 results were released today, were compiled by the research company Millward Brown.

Peter Walshe, Millward Brown global brand director, said Toyota's recall had not dented consumers' confidence in the carmaker. "It was a highly trusted brand before the recall and the company was always going to bounce back if it acted responsibly, which it did. It shows the resilience of the brand," Walshe told Automotive News Europe.

Toyota had been the most valuable auto brand every year from 2006 until 2009.

Mercedes-Benz moved to the No. 3 spot in the automotive category, overtaking Honda, after its brand value increased by 12 percent.

Nissan's 17 percent rise in brand value was helped by the marketing buzz created by the Leaf electric car, Walshe said. "Nissan is positioning itself as a green leader and its stance is paying off. It has also realized it is a challenger brand in most markets, so it is doing things differently in terms of its new models," he said.

The 2011 Top 100 ranking is led by Apple, which has a brand value of $153 billion. Apple this year took the top spot from last year's No. 1, Google, whose brand is valued at $111 billion.

Millward Brown measures brand equity based on interviews with more than 1 million consumers globally and an analysis of the financial and business performance of each company using data from Bloomberg and Datamonitor.

Toyota: North America output to hit 70 percent of pre-quake levels by end of June

Toyota Motor Corp. said today that it expects to restore North American production to about 70 percent of normal levels by the end of June — two months earlier than had been anticipated.

The automaker said output of eight North American-made Toyota models — Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, Sequoia, Sienna and Venza — is also expected to return to normal levels by the end of June.

Hobbled by parts shortages and logistics woes following Japan's March 11 earthquake, Toyota's North American plants have been operating at 30 percent of capacity for several weeks.

After the latest adjustment, the company said it expects its North American operations will be able operate at 70 percent of normal levels at least through July. It expects all North American production to return to normal levels by year end.

Toyota and its U.S. dealers are bracing for inventory shortages as a result of the earthquake, notably models such as the Prius hybrid and most of the Lexus lineup that are made only in Japan.

In part because of supply chain problems, Toyota's U.S. sales are up only 9 percent through April, vs. an overall market that has climbed 20 percent.

At the beginning of May, Toyota's U.S. inventory stood at 261,200 Scion, Lexus and Toyota models, according to the Automotive News Data Center. That is down from 329,500 units in stock on April 1.

"Our team members and suppliers are working closely on countermeasure activities to improve the parts condition from Japan," Steve St. Angelo, Toyota's executive vice president for North American production, said in a statement. "We continue to develop solutions in order to restore 100 percent production as soon as possible for all of our North American-made vehicles."

Since April 26, Toyota's North American plants have suspended production on Mondays and Fridays and have operated at half production on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays because of parts shortages.

Plants where the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, Sequoia, Sienna and Venza are produced are expected to return to normal production levels next month, with two production shifts five days per week.

Toyota said Tacoma, Tundra, RAV-4 and Lexus RX 350 output in North America will remain at their current reduced production levels.

Earlier today, Toyota President President Akio Toyoda said that the company's global production is expected to return to 70 percent of pre-quake levels in June.

"Our efforts at production normalization are progressing faster than announced," Toyoda said. "We are now confident that our vehicle production will recover to about 70 percent of our normal production volume on a worldwide basis from June."

Toyoda said three weeks ago that Toyota's domestic plants would start to bounce back in June, while its overseas plants beginning to increase production in August.

Additionally, the company has narrowed its list of at-risk parts to 30 from 150 last month.

TORRANCE, Calif., April 5, 2011 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced the one-millionth sale of the Toyota Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid gas-electric vehicle, in the United States. It is the third milestone for Toyota’s hybrid lineup in the last six months that started with the announcement of worldwide Toyota Prius sales topping two million in October 2010 and overall global Toyota hybrid sales passing three million last month.

“Since the Prius went on sale eleven years ago not a year has gone by when it hasn’t been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid and as we see fuel prices starting to rise again, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year. Prius paved the way for hybrids and while it is still the hybrid leader in sales and fuel economy, I’m proud to say that since its introduction, 13 other auto brands have seen the benefits of hybrid technology and joined the hybrid market.”

The third-generation Prius topped the EPA’s list of the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles for 2011. It has been named the Best Overall Value of the Year for the last nine years in a row by IntelliChoice, and has the highest owner loyalty of any mid-size vehicle for four of the last five years according to R.L. Polk. More than 97 percent of all Toyota Prii sold since 2000 are still on the road.

Since it was introduced in the U.S. in 2000, Prius, when compared to the average car, has saved American consumers more than an estimated 881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions.

In January 2011 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Toyota debuted the Prius v, the first vehicle to be debuted as part of the Prius family marketing strategy. Prius v, which goes on sale in third quarter of 2011, is a mid-size vehicle that provides more than 50 percent additional interior cargo space than the current Prius. In early 2012 Prius will launch two more Prius family members – the Prius c compact hybrid vehicle and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle.
